GHOST IN THE SHELL — Ultimate Futuristic Saga

Originally, Ghost in the Shell is a 1995 anime cyberpunk film based on the manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow. It was written by Kazunori Itō and directed by Mamoru Oshii, and stars the voices of Atsuko TanakaAkio Ōtsuka, and Iemasa KayumiGhost in the Shell was a Japanese-British international co-production, produced by KodanshaBandai Visual and Manga Entertainment, with animation provided by Production I.G.

The plot follows Motoko Kusanagi, a public-security agent, who hunts the mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. The philosophical themes include self-identity in a technologically advanced world. The music, composed by Kenji Kawai, includes an ancient Japanese language.

Widely considered one of the greatest anime films of all time, critics particularly praised the film’s visuals, achieved through a combination of traditional cel animation and CGI animation. The film, which had a budget over $10 million, was initially a box office failure, before drawing a cult following on home video, and eventually grossing approximately $43 million in total box office and home video sales revenue. It inspired filmmakers such as the Wachowskis, creators of the Matrix films, and James Cameron. In 2004, Oshii directed Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, billed as a separate work and not a true sequel. In 2008, Oshii released an updated version of the original film, Ghost in the Shell 2.0, featuring new audio and updated 3D animation. A live-action adaptation (See: Ghost in the Shell) starring Scarlett Johansson was released in 2017.

Due to huge success it was obvious for Holywood to make a remake of this title. So in 2017 Ghost in the Shell was released as science fiction film directed by Rupert Sanders and written by Jamie Moss, William Wheeler, and Ehren Kruger, based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow. It stars Scarlett JohanssonTakeshi KitanoMichael PittPilou AsbækChin Han and Juliette Binoche. Set in a near future when the line between humans and robots is blurring, the plot follows the Major (Johansson), a cyborg supersoldier who investigates her past.

Filming for Ghost in the Shell took place in New Zealand from February to June 2016, with additional filming in Hong Kong that June. The film premiered in Tokyo on March 16, 2017, and was released in the United States on March 31, 2017, in 2D, 3DIMAX 3D and 4DX.

It received mixed reviews, with praise for its visual style, action sequences, cinematography and score, but criticism for its story and lack of character development. The casting of Caucasian actors, particularly Johansson, drew accusations of racism and whitewashing in the United States. It grossed $169 million worldwide against a production budget of $110 million, and is considered a box office bomb.

The film has been nominated in two categories for the Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) Awards, and was also nominated for the ‘Most Innovative Advertising’ category at the Motion Picture Sound Editors‘ Golden Reel Awards. It won the 12th annual HPA Award for ‘Color Grading’. The film was on the Academy Awards shortlist for the category of Visual Effects, and later ended up on the shortlist for Hair and Makeup, but was not nominated for either category.

It was also nominated for Best Contemporary Make-up by the Make-Up and Hair Guild. On October 23, 2018, the film’s composer Lorne Balfe received the «Top Film Score» award at the ASCAP London Music Awards.

Synopsis: In the near future, Major (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people’s minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her and stop them before they do it to others. Based on the internationally acclaimed Japanese Manga, «The Ghost in the Shell.»

We must say that despite of some criticism around casting for this epic movie, we (Get Futuristic Crew) personally think that Scarlett Johansson was the perfect choice for this role, because of her popularity among Japanese viewers, due to success of the movie «Lost in Translation», and her ability to look convincing in complicated combat scenes.

But, before we end this article, there are some GREAT news for the fans of the series. NETFLIX is already announced the release of «Ghost in The Shell» anime series. When it comes to anime, Netflix has been on a tear recently. In November, the streaming service announced that it was creating a live-action version of Cowboy Bebop, new shows set in the worlds of Pacific Rim and Altered Carbon, and that it was bringing Neon Genesis Evangelion to subscribers. Now, another classic is coming.

As spotted by io9, Netflix announced that a new Ghost in the Shell anime is coming — Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 which will be directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed), and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex). Netflix doesn’t reveal any additional details, other than to say that it will be released sometime in 2020.

P.S. Although we liked the original soundtrack of the movie and the anime series, we would like to introduce to our readers the alternative «Ghost In The Shell» soundtrack by Japanese artists — «MAGNUS DEUS«, because we really think they did a great job recreating cyberpunk atmosphere of futuristic scene. Get Futuristic shades from Maison Martin Margiela

The high profile fashion house Maison Martin Margiela showcased their talents with the introduction to eyewear in the summer of 2008, a la Geordi La Forge from Star Trek “The Next Generation”. Ah yes, the fashion houses L’Incognito sunglasses had all the lil girlies going broke last summer in dire need of getting their hands on a pair of the fierce shades.
